Students Switching to Work Visa Routes
2025 Rules for Students Switching to Work Visa Routes
Previously, the UK immigration system allowed international students with a job offer to transition directly from a Student Visa to certain work-based visas before completing their studies. This offered a significant advantage, enabling qualified students to immediately contribute to the UK workforce upon securing suitable employment. This flexibility, however, has recently undergone significant revision.
Under the current regulations, students pursuing degree-level qualifications are no longer permitted to switch to a work route until after their course is successfully completed. While work visa applications are still possible, the employment start date must now be aligned with the official course completion date. There is a specific exception for PhD students, who are eligible to transition to a sponsored work route 24 months after the commencement of their doctoral studies, without requiring full completion.
To successfully switch from a Student Visa to a UK Work Visa, several crucial steps must be followed. First, you will need to meet the specific eligibility criteria for your chosen work visa route. A comprehensive online application form must then be completed and submitted to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), accompanied by all necessary supporting documentation. Applicable fees include the visa application fee and the immigration healthcare surcharge. It is vital to ensure your Student Visa is valid (i.e., has not expired) at the time of your application.
